De-Mystifying the 2011 NEC for PV Installers

How best to utilize the ultimate exam resource

On March 14th and 21st 2013, Cathy Redson, SolPowerPeople President and NABCEP Certified PV Installation Professional™, will teach a two-part lecture to “de-mystify” the national electric code and empower solar practitioners and candidates preparing to sit for the NABCEP PV Installation Professional Exam (C) to be able to understand and navigate the 2011 National Electric Codebook.

On April 20th, 2013, solar industry professionals in 23 cities across the US and Canada will strive to gain one of the solar industry’s most highly coveted credentials, the NABCEP Certified PV Installation Professional. Due to the rigorous eligibility requirements to be able to take the Exam, and the difficulty of the four-hour test, this certification is regarded as the “gold standard” in the solar industry.

You can bet your bottom dollar that those who have passed all have had one thing in common- they know how to use the 2011 National Electric Codebook.  The Codebook and a Casio fx260 calculator are provided when you take the test.  This is a tough document to digest–broken into articles with numbers and letters that seem like a foreign language to those who haven’t thoroughly massaged it’s pages for years.

Knowing how to navigate this book from front to back and being familiar with it’s language is a critical skill for those preparing to take the NABCEP PV Installation Professional Exam, and for good reason. NABCEP structures the test to ensure that PV installers can demonstrate that they are capable of adapting to different challenges posed in the “real-world” of PV system design and installation. Quite literally, the success of our industry depends on the fact that the PV systems being installed are safe, reliable, and deliver on the promised performance the technology is capable of.

Over the next few weeks SolPowerPeople will be providing a series of lectures as part of their #SolarMOOC (Solar Massive Open Online Course) to assist those who are getting ready to sit for the NABCEP PV Installation Professional Exam (C) offering guidance and support as they prepare.  During the next 43 days up to the April 20 test date, SolPowerPeople will welcome solar professionals to present lectures on topics related to the NABCEP PV Installation Professional Job Task Analysis, followed by weekly Newsletters that are packed full of valuable resources, problem sets, and tips for test takers to help them prepare.  This month marks the one year anniversary of the #SolarMOOC, which has been an incredible resource as the first Massive Open Online Course, or MOOC, of its kind- one that is aimed specifically at educating the pubic on advanced solar PV concepts and helping interested individuals in preparing for NABCEP PV Installation Professional Certification.
